Since the Maverick upgrade some programs freeze randomly longer than before. Almost daily the bluetooth will disconnect from iTunes requiring System Prefs Sound to reconnect. Then shortly after that the iTunes will forget the radio station I was playing. This did not happen before. I now check the Software update often hoping for the cure. A claimed benefit for Maverick is the improved battery use, however I never had battery issues in my MacBook with earlier OS.Unrelated, the AppleCare Protection Plan can not be bought if the MacBook is older than 3 years - enforced obsolescence? Think what you wish.
Actually, you cannot purchase it once your one year warranty has expired. And, you cannot renew it after the third year.Fixing a Mavericks Installation Problem.Try these in order:1. Restart the computer in, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down theCOMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer andafter the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'
S ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. Status of the hard drive. If it does not say 'Verified' then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is 'Verified' then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button.
If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. It is not a good idea to install an update when you are having problems. Some bug fix releases will address specific problems, but unless you have one of those specific problems, installing an update is only going to make things worse.Unrelated, the AppleCare Protection Plan can not be bought if the MacBook is older than 3 years - enforced obsolescence? No. Mass-produced electronics. Uninstall Western Digital's SmartWare. It has been known to completely erase hard disks. The Seagate software should also be removed. Most of the junk you have installed will cause your Mac to run poorly, or not at all. Of the various 'anti-virus' products I evaluated on a Mac running nothing other than a brand new Mavericks installation and a minimally configured User account, Intego's 'netbarrier' and 'virusbarrier' products rendered it practically unusable.

Any experienced Mac user would consider it unacceptable. Intego was far more detrimental to performance than even more notorious products, none of which convey any benefit. It's your Mac, do what you want with it, but if you get rid of Intego, Trusteer Rapport, and all the other nonessential junk burdening your Mac you will be amazed how well it works.
If it were possible to install 64 GB RAM your Mac would still run poorly, given all that garbage. You don't need it.
